BOSS Lifeskills Activities

These FREE educational and recreational trips are made possible by BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Service-member) Lifeskills Training Allowance. Trips are designed to impart valuable lifeskills, to promote comradary among single service members, and to reduce stress to maintain resiliency and mission readiness. Below are some examples of prior activities. To get involved, speak with your BOSS representative or better yet, become a BOSS advisor yourself and sit in on their bi-monthly meetings held at the Hobson Recreation Center.

Kayak Monterey Bay

Explore the harbor, wharf, kelp forests, and cannery row shorefront. This is a must-do event for anyone living or visiting the Monterey Peninsula. You are almost guaranteed to see Harbor Seals, Sea Lions, and California Sea Otters up close and personal!

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

This activity is a great way to exercise the core, relax, and explore the kelp forests of Monterey and Pacific Grove.

Introduction to Surfing

When in Rome… These introduction to Surfing events are designed to get your toes wet, and introduce you to the world of surfing. Events will be held on local beaches, surf and weather permitting.

Lover’s Point B-B-Q and Mixed Watersports

A great way to explore the region and interact with other service members on these BOSS/ MWR sponsored events. Paddleboards and Kayaks will be provided along with lunch.

Pinnacles National Park Day Hike

Visit America’s newest National Park (and the closest NP to the Monterey Peninsula). Bring a headlamp or flashlight to explore the Balconies Cave System and don’t forget to look up for a chance to see the endangered California Condor— the largest land bird in North America!

Hiking Point Lobos

Visit nearby Point Lobos State Park and view some of the most beautiful coastline in the country. These easy-moderate hikes will take half a day and will explore Monterey’s rich cultural history and marine sea life.

Arroyo Seco River Gorge B-B-Q and Swimming

This sunny visit to nearby Arroyo Seco Gorge offers swimming in tight, narrow canyons, and the opportunity to socialize on BOSS/ MWR sponsored barbeque.

Yosemite National Park Camp Trips

Visit one of the great wonders of the world at Yosemite National Park. Famous for its colossal granite walls, enormous water falls, and giant sequoia groves, these camp trips depart on Friday evenings and return Sunday afternoons. One full day of hiking and an afternoon visit to the valley floor will make for an unforgettable California experience.

Los Padres National Forest/ Arroyo Seco Camp Trips

These local overnight camp trips will take you to sunny Los Padres National Forest along the beautiful Arroyo Seco River. Native American artifacts, fossils, and a riveting river are the main attractions.
