Army Emergency Relief

A Legacy of Caring

The Legacy–Did You Know?

Since incorporation in 1942, AER has faithfully helped the Army "Take care of its Own" by providing emergency financial assistance to Soldiers and their Families.

Financial asistance is provided through interest-free loans and grants, or a combination of both to assist in areas such as:

  • Emergency Travel
  • Rent/Utilities
  • Essential POV Repair
  • Non-Receipt of Pay
  • Advance Travel Funds for PCS
  • Dependent Dental Care
  • Rental Vehicles
  • Minor Home Repair
  • Initial Purchase of Furniture
  • Replacement Vehicle

AER's Scholarship Program is a secondary mission to help Army Families with education costs at the undergraduate level. AER offers two scholarship programs:

  • Spouse Scholarships
  • MG James Ursano Children's Scholarship

"When AER was Needed, AER was There"

AER was There When:

  • (Specialist) Single with one dependent child requested assistance for dependent daughter's funeral expenses. Service Member was in Basic Combat Training at the time of the childs death. Dependent child was 2 years old and was in hospice care at the time of her death. Service Member had no relatives who could contribute to the funeral expenses. AER provided a loan for $4,000 to cover funeral expenses until family SGLI benefits received.
  • (Sergeant) Married and expecting a child. Spouse was employed, but due to "high risk" pregnancy could return to work. Service Member was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan. Spouse's inability to work resulted in reduced income causing a financial strain on the family. Service Member was then involved in a vehicle accident. Insurance company wanted to total the car but the Service Member could not afford to purchase a new vehicle. AER provided a grant for $2,500 to cover the essential vehicle repairs.

"When AER was Needed, AER was There"

  • (Captain) Assigned as HHC, WTB Company Commander. Married with three dependent children. Service Members Spouse required dental surgery (teeth did not fall out from birth and had to be extracted and replaced with implants); procedure not covered by insurance. AER provided a loan for $4,000 to cover the dental expenses.
